University of Catania

Directions, Transport and Travel To and From Catania University
(Catania, Italy)

Catania is well served by Sicily's major motorways, railways, and airports. Visitors from major European and Italian cities arrive in Catania everyday. Transportation within the city is fairly convenient, with well-developed roads connecting the city's suburbs to the city centre.

Travel by Air

Despite its remote location, Catania is easily accessible from mainland Italy and major European cities. The city is well served by an international airport, a commercial seaport, and several train lines. Domestic flights usually arrive at the Catania-Fontanarossa Airport south of the city, while the larger Palermo International Airport serves many of the international flights.

Car Parking

Parking in Catania can be difficult, especially in the summer and tourist seasons. Large, free parking spaces can be found at airports and universities, but in the city centre you may have to compete with locals and other tourists for parking space in malls, parks, and other public places.

Travel by Trains and Rail

Catania's central train station, Catania Centrale, is one of the busiest in Sicily. It serves the main lines Messina-Syracuse, Catania-Gela, and Catania-Palermo on a daily basis. The Circumetnea, a small, privately-owned train, also stops at the Centrale and goes around Mount Etna, climbing to almost 100 m above sea level before descending back towards the Giarre-Reposto in the north.

Travel by Buses and Coachl

Just opposite the Catania Centrale lies the city's main bus station, a 10-minute walk from the city centre. Buses connect Catania to major cities in Italy, including Caltanissetta, Enna, Messina, Taormina, and Syracuse.

Travel by Taxi

There are many taxis plying the city, most of them serving the airports. Taxis usually line up in front of the arrival terminal at Catania-Fontnarossa and offer hotel pick-up, scheduled services, and even guided tours for some newcomers.
